Keeping Warm in the Garden This Winter
Spending nights in the garden is a great way to connect with friends, but as the winter weather draws in, it can be pretty off-putting, and the warmth of central heating looks far more appealing. However, don’t let winter spoil your outdoor space just yet. With clear skies to fall in love under and the beauty of nighttime nature, there are many reasons that your garden should be the place to be all year round.
As a supplier of patio gas, we know that gas-fueled heaters are the way to go, so we explore some of the most common models and why they are ideal above other fuel alternatives for keeping you warm this winter.
Large Stand-Alone Gas Garden Heaters
A stand-alone patio heater is the best option if you want the most effective heat solution this winter. They come in various sizes and styles but offer the best warmth in the cold winter weather.
The two most common options are the pyramid patio and umbrella-shaped heaters. These heaters are ideal for leaving out all year round as they are incredibly durable in all weather. The pyramid heaters sit around 7 ft tall and can be very stylish, and there are a variety of covers you can contain them in when they are not in use.
Alternatively, you could choose an umbrella-style heater which offers the same benefits but less stylish appeal. Again these are reasonably tall and are cheaper than the pyramid styles. These are very heavy, and the shape is not quite as appealing as the other style but they do an excellent job of keeping you warm on a cold winter’s night. However, like the pyramid heaters, they sometimes come with a cover to protect them whilst out of use but are pretty durable against the elements without it.
Wall-Mounted Heaters
Wall-mounted heaters are ideal if you are not outside for long or are looking to heat under a covered canopy. However, these electric heaters can be a bit of an eyesore on your building and don’t offer the best warmth for very long. These devices can be fairly robust, so once installed, there’s little need to worry about them, but you can find covers for most styles and shapes.
In addition, they usually cost a little bit more than a gas patio heater and require an electricity source, which will mean high installation costs and potential alterations to your property for mounting them.
Bullet Gas Heaters
The bullet heater is not quite as tall as stand-alone gas heaters and feature a cylindrical shape. Due to their size, these are much more popular for gardens as they take up less room, and since most of them come with a wheel, they are relatively easy to move on your own.
Although the output is not quite as powerful as the larger ones, it is still a much better choice than its electrical counterparts and, in turn, uses much less fuel. These casings are still very durable, which means it can withstand the torrential rainfalls that Britain often sees in the winter months. However, you can also get covers to help shield them and give them a longer lifespan.
Gas Fire Pits
There has been a great demand for gas firepits over the past few years. They offer warmth, and the fantastic range of styles can give your garden a beautiful focal point. We do admit they usually come with a hefty price tag, but they are so beautiful that they are worth every penny.
Of course, there is a range of budget options which start at around £130, but if you are looking for sleek and elegant, that is when they get a bit pricey. They still offer the same great output as every other gas-fueled patio heater. They just do it with much more style and luxury. Gas fire pits are a great show-stopper piece and a perfect way to impress your guests.
Coal and Wood Fuel Patio Heaters
Of course, when it comes to keeping warm, coal or wood-fueled heaters have been used for centuries effectively. Coal or wood burners have been the go-to for keeping warm outside, from fire pits to chimeneas. But, although they may be the cheapest option, they have many downsides.
If you want an impromptu gathering in the garden, you need to be prepared, making it much less spontaneous. A coal, or wood, fueled fire pit is time-consuming. Unlike gas burners, they can take hours to reach their full burning potential and heat. In addition to taking a while to heat up, they also take hours to cool down. This factor can keep you out in the garden for much longer than intended as you wait for it to cool down and defeats the purpose of having it to keep warm. Of course, you could extinguish the heat with water, but it spoils the pit and makes it much more difficult to clean up the next day.
Finally, they are unpredictable. If you purchase a chimenea, the heat output is significantly reduced due to the surrounding material enclosing the flames. An open firepit will subject you to rogue sparks, which could lead to a potential fire hazard. Whereas with a gas burner, they are reliable at keeping within their enclosings whilst still providing enough heat.
