What is Propane Gas Used For?
Propane is a prevalent gas for domestic and commercial settings and offers a range of benefits with many applications. It became commercially available in 1911 and is the by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. When this gas is in storage, it forms a liquid due to the compressed state and makes it easy to transport. As one of our most popular bottle gases, we decided it was time to explore the properties and uses of propane.
The Properties of Propane
Fitting into the LPG category of bottled gases, propane is a flammable natural product typically stored in metal canisters of various sizes. LPG is derived from natural products, making propane a fossil fuel, but with significant differences from the likes of coal and oil.
When burning propane, it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere but does so at a much less harmful rate than its counterparts. Using propane as a fuel can produce up to 90% fewer toxic gases in the atmosphere than coal and oil, making it green energy and much better for the environment.
Propane is colourless, odourless and looks much like water when pressurised into a canister. It has a boiling point of -42°. Quite often, propane will offer a slight smell, but this has been added for the safety of users who will be able to detect any leaks by the odour released.
Domestic Uses of Propane
There are various domestic applications of propane fuel, mainly for cooking and heating.
Patio Heaters– Possibly one of the more common domestic uses of propane is for fueling garden heating. Our propane gas bottles come in various sizes to suit minor domestic requirements for ease of storage and use.
BBQ and Outdoor Cooking – From the garden gas BBQ to the camping stove put in the back of the car for camping, propane offers a great cost-effective solution for ensuring you can produce excellent tasting food no matter where you may be.
Motorhome Fuel – Due to its boiling point, propane is one of the more prefered gases to fuel cooking and heating facilities in motorhomes. Remaining as a liquid in much colder climates can prevent the gas from evaporating whilst not in use and is excellent for year-round fuel solutions.
Off-Grid Living – Due to its transportation ability, it is a prevalent natural gas for fueling off-grid or rural properties, which may not have a mains-connected supply.
These are just a few of the most common uses of propane in domestic settings, but there are many more, including pool and water heaters. Having a regular supply, especially for off-grid properties, is essential. At Bottle Gases, we can offer cost-effective rent-free options for our propane gas canisters on a contractual basis.
The Uses of Propane in Commercial Industries
Due to the boiling temperature of propane, it is often the most favourable bottled gas used in commercial and industrial applications. With a lower boiling point, it remains for longer in outdoor storage, which is ideal for many businesses.
Mobile Catering – As a business which requires instant heat and a cost-effective solution to fuel cookers and refrigeration, propane can offer the best option for LPG. It provides easy application, an instant burn and is reliable all year round, even throughout winter.
On-Site Power – Building sites usually require an alternative power source to ensure the continued use of power tools and essential cooking equipment before installing electric outlets. Often it is used to power a portacabin which acts as a hub for the workers and a central point for supervisors or security.
Forklift Fuel – There are many variations of power generation for forklifts. However, the environmentally friendly option is one powered by LPG. In addition, they offer the lowest cost to run in contrast to diesel and require no downtime compared to electric equivalents. These can significantly reduce the costs and overheads of warehouses.
Portable Heaters- Whether you work in construction or the trades, heat is crucial to keeping warm as winter comes, and with a portable heater, it can be taken from site to site easily. These are fueled best by cost-effective propane, which will not evaporate in the colder weather.
Once again, these are just the most common applications of propane in commercial settings. It can also be used to fuel other machines and equipment and has even been employed in fueling cars as a more environmentally friendly fuel than petrol and diesel.
